In the early books of the Aeneid, Aeneas is portrayed as the son of gods (1.579), "handsome past all others" (4.190), and a valiant, loyal warrior. In his speech to Dido in Book 4, however, he is suddenly depicted in a far more negative light. In contrast to Dido's emotional outpouring, Aeneas appears evasive and cold, and he seems to imply that he is immune from censure. Aeneas, prince of Troy, is shipwrecked off the coast of Africa by the goddess Juno. He is taken in by Queen Dido of Carthage.

It was composed no later than July 1688, and had been performed at Josias Priest The Aeneid. Before Aeneas’s arrival, Dido is the confident and competent ruler of Carthage, a city she founded on the coast of North Africa. She is resolute, we learn, in her determination not to marry again and to preserve the memory of her dead husband, Sychaeus, whose murder at the hands of Pygmalion, her brother, caused her to flee her native Tyre. The king of gods sent his emissary to tell Aeneas to sail away ASAP.

Aeneas is a rich kid with his own yacht and laddish crew: Dido is his prize, a star model with whom he can dazzle paparazzi. For the world at large (represented, as ever, by the chorus) no more perfect celebrity marriage could be imagined.
